25 Years Climbing in Tibet & the Karakoram & Dozens of First Ascents. All the Tricks & Methods for High Altitude Climbing. Japan is a proven incubator for high altitude alpinists, and an obvious training ground to hone your expedition methods and gear. From the slopes of Mt Fuji to big alpine faces, the techniques and strategies used here translate directly to the Greater Ranges.
From Japans classic ice to Asia’s Hardest Alpine Routes, our Trips are Climbing not Tourism
15 years of trips across Japan and we have just scratched the surface, despite having seen a vast array of places and styles. Japanese climbing is unique, from bizarre mixed routes, to granite spires and even ice inside Mt Fuji, and there’s a lifetimes worth of out there, whatever you’re into.
Japan still has big potential for new routes, deep in the mountains or in obscure valleys. We make a point of exploring and trying new areas, combining local and international techniques to unlock the best of Japan.

The wild side of Japan, far from the ski resorts.
There is much more to Japan than ramen shops, crowded temples, shopping streets & train stations. This is the side most tourists will never know, far from the train lines and expressways, out in the 75% of the country covered in mountains
Despite the stereotype of urbanization and big cities, Japan is very good at protecting its mountains, where peaks within a few hours of Tokyo’s 30millon residents are still quiet, the water still drinkable, the forests teeming with wildlife & mountain culture still strong.
Japanese TV regularly shows climbing programs, Japanese climbing brands have excellent reputations, and an entire cuisine of mountain food upholds a connection to the landscape and history.
Our Climbers.
Alpine climbing in Japan doesn’t attract ordinary people.
Japan lends itself to the unusual, and the mountains of Japan attract climbers looking beyond the ordinary destinations. Alpine Climbing Japan’s climbers are attracted to a mix of Japanese culture, unique climbing objectives, and seeing where it is that japans elite climbers come from.
For many this is their first time climbing outside popular climbing culture, often leading to a future in expeditions or first ascents. Many leave to pursue bigger things in bigger ranges, and are replaced by new climbers wanting to do new things.
“I didn’t know it was like that“
There’s nothing on the internet saying what it’s really like, just a mix of rumors. Fuji isn’t closed at all, but it’s much harder than it looks.

“No One Else Would Do It”
We wanted to visit multiple ice climbing areas to see what’s really out there and avoid the busy spots. Alpine Climbing Japan took us to places there’s no way we’d have found.

“These Guys Work Hard”
‘Working Climbers’ is exactly right. Only days back from the Himalayas we drove across the country, bought all the gear then straight out to the mountain. Climbing, digging snow caves, endless talk and action. It’s more than just the coffee
